財団の概要

沿革

本財団は、繊維商社社長（当時）伊藤萬助氏による京都帝国大学への寄附金20万円を基に、化学繊維の学術と産業の振興を目的として1936年9月1日に同大学内に設立されました。それ以来76年の長きにわたり、旧民法に基づく財団法人として、代々の京大総長を理事長に招き、その活動を継続してきました。その後、2013年4月1日より、2008年施行の新法人法に対応するため京都大学とは独立した新たな公益財団法人として生まれ変わり、現在に至っています。

目的・背景

本財団の目的と事業内容は時代とともに変化しましたが、現在は、広く高分子科学分野の学術及び科学技術の振興を目的とし、当該分野における研究成果の公開及び専門知識の普及、産学間及び国際的学術交流、並びに研究教育の支援に関する諸事業を行っています。具体的には、公開講演会、研究者育成講座、国際研究集会などの開催、学術講演集の刊行、及び公募型研究助成を主事業としています。

前記の歴史的経緯が示すとおり、本財団は、京都大学の繊維・高分子関連分野（旧工学部工業化学教室・繊維化学教室、現大学院工学研究科高分子化学専攻・材料化学専攻及び協力研究室）との連携が強く、また現京都大学の高分子科学研究者を主要メンバーとする非営利学術組織Kyoto Institute of Polymer Science (KIPS) と連携・協力関係にあります。一方、産業界からは、財団の維持会員企業として年会費（寄付金）の拠出を受けています。これらの連携・協力と支援が、本財団の一貫した背景をなしています。

Public Interest Incorporated (PII) Foundation of Institute for Chemical Fibers, Japan

Founded in 1936, this Institute strives today to contribute to the promotion of polymer science and technology in general. Its activities include the organization and/or sponsorship of
(1) academic lectures,
(2) international conferences,
(3) young scientists’ symposia,
(4) educational courses for young researchers, and
(5) a research grant.

For historical reasons, the Foundation is in close cooperation with the Departments of Polymer Chemistry and Materials Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, as well as with Kyoto Institute of Polymer Science (KIPS), which is a nonprofit society of the polymer scientists centered on Kyoto University. The Foundation is also indebted to its Supporting Industries for their donations. These collaborations, cooperation, and support form the consistent background of the Foundation.
